
BACOLOD CITY – More than 10,000 delegates and visitors witnessed a vibrant performances at the Negros Island Regional Athletic Association Meet (NIRAAM) 2026 inaugural kicked off at Panaad Park and Stadium on Sunday, March 1, 2026. Mayor Greg Gasataya welcomed 12 delegations from the municipalities and cities of Siquijor, Bais, Guihulngan, Tanjay, Bayawan, Canlaon, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental, Kabankalan, Silay, Negros Occidental, and host city Bacolod City for the historic regional sports gathering. “This is your time—make the most of NIRAAM 2026. We believe the next Olympian is from the Negros Island Region, especially Bacolod City,” Gasataya said, encouraging learner-athletes to give their best. Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson echoed the mayor’s sentiments, reminding athletes that the meet serves as a crucial opportunity to prove themselves and earn a spot to represent the region in the Palarong Pambansa. Department of Education Undersecretary Peter Irving Corvera emphasized the value of athletics in youth development. “Sports keep our youth disciplined and resilient. You have earned your place here, it was not by accident,” Corvera stated. The opening ceremony drew city mayors and governors from the 12 participating local government units, underscoring strong regional unity and support for grassroots sports. Spectators were treated to dynamic performances from the iconic MassKara dancers, as well as captivating field demonstrations by Handumanan National High School and Domingo Lacson National High School. The celebration was capped by a spectacular fireworks display that lit up the Bacolod night sky. The week-long regional sports competition features 27 sporting events and runs until March 7, highlighting athletic excellence, camaraderie, and the shared aspirations of the Negros Island Region.
