Bacolod Filipino-Chinese Community to Celebrate
Chinese New Year 2006

Over thiry-five Filipino-Chinese associations of Bacolod City were represented at an exploratory meeting called by Bacolod Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia at the Bacolod Business Inn last night. About 50 persons, mostly presidents or chairmen of their respective association, attended the meeting and represented the Chinese business community, civic religious and family associations, as well as school and alumni groups.
Foremost in the agenda was the celebration of Chinese New Year 2006 in Bacolod City. Mayor Leonardia saw the need to organize the numerous Filipino-Chinese associations in Bacolod to have a more effective and unified plan of action.
During dinner, the group watched a video presentation of the Chinese New Year celebration in Iloilo City last February 9, 2005 which was attended by Mayor Leonardia, members of the Filipino-Chinese community of Bacolod, and a group from the City Hall Press Corps. Several ideas for a meaningful celebration in Bacolod next year were suggested, among which were a cultural parade and program, fireworks display, a golf invitation tournament, a dog show to usher in 2006, the Year of the Dog.
A Steering Committees was organized to make a preliminary study and plan necessary working committees. Chosen unanimously to chair the Steering Committee was Mr. Alfredo Barcelona of the Bacolod-Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., with Mr. Enrique Dy of the Negros Occidental Filipino-Chinese Amity Club as vice chairman. Members of the steering committee are Andres Valencia, Crispin Chua, Carlos Ganihong, Cleto Marcelino Uy, William Ong, James Chua, Adolfo Lim, Lorenzo Cordova, Fr. Noly Que, and the presidents of the ten family associations.
Mr. Barcelona emphasized the importance of keeping true to the theme of the celebration which should focus on the Chinese cultural value of sacredness of family and family ties. He said the idea of family closeness expanded to community will be a powerful venue for enhancing and sharing cultures. Mayor Leonardia, who will be Honorary Head of the committee, commended the enthusiasm and vision of the group and confirmed the city's support for the planned celebration.(CMO-PIO)
