In Remembrance of an Ilonggo National Hero

In this world, we would meet different people from all walks of life. Some of them are heroes. But being  a hero is not in a name, it's not in the wealth, it's not even in the position that one has reached in life. Being a hero is doing a noble thing to another without asking anything in return. Heroism is self-sacrifice which gives happiness to one's self, because it comes from the heart. A hero's pure intention is to give. Graciano Lopez Jaena was like this.
Graciano Lopez Jaena was born on Dec. 18, 1856 in Jaro, Iloilo City. He died on January 20, 1896 in Barcelona, Spain. He is the only Ilonggo National Hero of the Philippines.
In his name, sprang forth an elementary school here in Bacolod City, the Graciano Lopez Jaena Elementary School that celebrated today January 19, 2005 the 109th Death Anniversary of the mentioned ilonggo national hero. The them of this year's celebration is "ILONGGO HEROISM: NOW AND FOREVER."
Mayor Evelio Leonardia who graced the occasion by his presence said that Graciano Lopez Jaena embodied Ilonggo nationalism. He said that we must be humble and we need to inculcate in the hearts and minds of the students the essence of nationalism. He added that the Death Anniversary of Graciano Lopez Jaena will be institutionalized as an ordinance to be celebrated every year. However, Mrs. Josefina Temporosa, Principal of GLJES said that it is being celebrated today, January 19 since tomorrow January 20 is the Feast of San Sebastian in Bacolod City. Temporosa specified that nationalism must be shown thru love and unity among Filipino people.
Hon. Anne Marie Palermo, Dr. Milagros Gonzales Schools division superintendent, Mr. Rolando Espina President of Lopez Jaena clan, Dr. Luisito Escalona, Assistant Schools Division Superintendent, Mrs. Trinidad Seva, former School Division Superintendent, were among the guests present during the occasion today at Graciano Lopez Jaena Elementary School.
The program ended with an offering of flowers by the guests at the monument of our Ilonggo National Hero Graciano Lopez Jaena. (CMO-PIO/rdp)
