The observance of the
PEACE WEEK officially started this morning ( November 29), with hundreds
of high school students from various schools in Bacolod City and peace
advocates participating in the early morning Walk for Peace. The opening ceremony followed at the San Sebastian Cathedral with Representative Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel of AKBAYAN as guest speaker. In her speech, Baraquel urged everyone to reflect on the provisions cited in the resolutions passed by both the City of Bacolod and Province of Negros Occidental declaring this week’s celebration, being in solidarity with the week of peace in Mindanao. She added that this can help unite and continue to inspire everyone in working for peace. Baraquel said that she and some congressmen are now working on how to transform the PNP and the army into active participants instead of being obstacles. On the ongoing peace efforts of the government, Baraquel admitted that the RPA-ABB remains to be a big challenge, thus the need to implement the peace settlement and support it. The solon stressed the need to change the present culture, consciousness and, more so, oneself in order to bring about a more peaceful community. Various activities have been lined up during the week-long celebration. These include peace exhibit and concert, peace forum and a dialogue between the youth and public officials, among others. The event will be highlighted with the celebration of “Peacetival” on December 4, and culminate with a symbolic parade of Christmas lanterns and lights dubbed “Lights for Peace” on December 5. Participating organizations include Pax Christi Pilipinas, Paghili-usa sa Paghidaet sa Negros (PSPN), PeaceNet, SK Fedaration of Bacolod and Negros Occidental, Liga ng mga Barangay of Bacolod, Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural and Educational Association (NOPSSCEA), public schools through the Department of Education, RPMP Foundation, Inc. and the Public Information Office of Bacolod*(CMO-PIO/jmi) |
