The World Health Organization declared Bacolod
City as one that has the best Immunization practices among all local
government unit it has visited in the country.
WHO Representative Dr. Howard Sobel, who visited
the City of Smiles this week, said that Bacolod City to date has 85%
immunization coverage among its population comprising 61 Barangays.
The immunization program covers BCG, DPT, and
anti-tetanus among others, Sobel, who was accompanied by Dr. Ayan Ou, is
in Bacolod city to evaluate the immunization practices and to further
improve it by offering technical assistance.
In a meeting with Bacolod City Mayor Evelio R.
Leonardia, Sobel said, "This is one of the most impressive city I
have been to."
The DOH Region 6 Director Dr. Renelyn Reyes said
that they are trying to advocate the strategy that would increase the
immunization coverage. This strategy is called 'Reaching every
Barangay" or "Direct Strategy". Under this strategy a DOH
team will regularly visit every barangay and entail a detailed
immunization mopping-up activity in the area.
Also present in the meeting were DOH Engr. Luz
Garcia, DOH-CHR 6 Jude Onayan, Dr. Luz Ma-apni, Nurses Elena Gamabong and
Susan Ramos.
