Mayor Evelio Leonardia reiterated anew the need for an effective solid
waste management program and adherence to the "no segregation, no
collection" policy of the city government.
Leonardia said that the policy being implemented by the
city government regarding solid waste management is not only in
compliance with Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste
Management Act but also to ensure the protection of our environment.
The mayor stressed the importance of an effective solid
waste segregation since the city government is now finalizing the
requirements for the construction of a sanitary landfill in Barangay
Felisa.
The construction of a sanitary landfill is among the
city government’s top priority programs for this year, Leonardia
stressed.
The mayor said that when this project materializes,
Bacolod City is probably one of the first cities in the country to have
constructed a sanitary landfill. Leonardia also stressed that a report
from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources showed that the
present location for the sanitary landfill is the best site for the
project.
In sanitary landfill, waste is spread in layers on a
piece of land and compacted tightly before they are covered with soil.
The objective of a sanitary landfill is to greatly reduce the volume of
waste. After a landfill has reached capacity, it is closed for waste
deposition and covered. It could be used later as pasture, as cropland
or for recreational purposes. |
